How to determine if your blood pressure monitor needs calibration?

1. Basic Check
First, check if the device is certified by international standards (such as ESH, AAMI), and confirm that the cuff size is suitable for your upper arm circumference (the air bladder should cover 80% of the upper arm). Also, check the battery level; low battery power may lead to inaccurate readings.
2. Comparative Measurement Method
Comparison with medical equipment: Take your home blood pressure monitor to a hospital and measure simultaneously with a medical blood pressure monitor (within a 2-minute interval). If the systolic pressure difference is ≤5mmHg and the diastolic pressure difference is ≤3mmHg, the device is functioning correctly.
Verification by family members: Have a healthy adult measure their blood pressure at the same time. If the difference is >10mmHg, be alert to possible device malfunction.
3. Multiple Measurement Observation
Measure three times consecutively (with at least a 1-minute interval between each measurement). If the difference between the last two results is >10mmHg, calibration or replacement of the device may be necessary. Normal blood pressure fluctuations should be within a reasonable range; abnormal fluctuations may indicate a device problem.
4. Recommended Regular Calibration
It is recommended to calibrate electronic blood pressure monitors annually. This can be done through a professional institution, a standard simulator, or by comparing it with a mercury sphygmomanometer. If the device has not been used for a long time or if abnormal readings are observed, calibration should be prioritized.
Precautions
Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measurement, maintaining a quiet environment and suitable room temperature.
The cuff should be at the same level as the heart, avoiding being too tight or too loose.
If the device cannot be calibrated or the error consistently exceeds the acceptable range, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or replace the device.
