I. Preparation
1. Verify compatibility: Check the stethoscope brand and model, and purchase a new diaphragm of the exact size; prioritize brand-specific accessories to avoid air leaks.
2. Inspect the new diaphragm: Ensure the new diaphragm is flat, free of cracks, and retains good elasticity; avoid using parts that have already aged or hardened.
3. Prepare tools: Have alcohol swabs and clean cotton swabs ready; for some models, a small amount of talcum powder may assist with installation.
II. Removing the Old Diaphragm
1. Identify the fastening mechanism: Observe how the old diaphragm is secured-common types include snap-fit or screw-on (rotating) designs; some brands (like 3M) with tunable diaphragms require specific removal techniques.
2. Safely remove the old diaphragm: For snap-fit types, gently pry the edge with your fingertips to peel it off slowly; for screw-on types, grasp the retaining ring and rotate it counter-clockwise to remove it. If the diaphragm is stuck, wipe the edges with an alcohol swab to help loosen it.
3. Avoid common pitfalls: Do not use sharp tools like screwdrivers to pry forcefully, as scratching the metal chestpiece can cause permanent air leaks.
III. Installing the New Diaphragm
1. Clean contact surfaces: Use a cotton swab dipped in a small amount of medical alcohol to wipe the groove where the chestpiece meets the diaphragm, removing any residual adhesive or dirt.
2. Align and install: Align the new diaphragm with the edge of the chestpiece, ensuring the center aligns perfectly with the sound channel opening; for some models, lightly dusting the inner flexible edge of the diaphragm with talcum powder can reduce friction during installation.
3. Secure and tighten: Press evenly around the edge of the diaphragm until it is fully seated in the groove or you hear a snap; for screw-on types, tighten the retaining ring clockwise. Ensure the diaphragm lies flat without wrinkles and the edges are not lifting.
IV. Post-installation Check
1. Functional test: Put on the stethoscope and gently tap the diaphragm surface with your finger; a clear tapping sound without any air-leakage noise indicates a successful installation.
2. Fine-tuning: If the auscultation sound is faint, re-check that the diaphragm is fully sealed; ensure there is no displacement, then press the edges firmly again.
