The reflex hammer, also known as a percussion hammer, is a common tool used in medical examinations to test the reflexes of a patient. It consists of a handle and a rubber head, which is typically weighted to provide the necessary force when striking a body part.

The main purpose of using a reflex hammer is to assess the integrity of the nervous system, particularly the deep tendon reflexes. These reflexes help doctors evaluate the functionality of the sensory and motor pathways in the body. By tapping specific areas, such as the knee, elbow, or ankle, healthcare professionals can elicit a reflex response and gather information about the patient's nervous system health.

When a reflex hammer strikes a tendon, it causes a brief stretch of the muscle attached to that tendon. This stretch activates specialized nerve receptors called muscle spindles, which then send signals to the spinal cord. The spinal cord processes these signals and sends an immediate response back to the muscle, causing it to contract involuntarily. This reflex action is what doctors observe and evaluate during the examination.

By testing reflexes, healthcare providers can detect abnormalities that may indicate various conditions. For example, a diminished or absent reflex response could suggest nerve damage, spinal cord injury, or certain neurological disorders. On the other hand, an exaggerated or hyperactive reflex might indicate different underlying issues.
