1. Oral Measurement

Suitable for: Conscious and cooperative adults and children over 6 years old.

Steps: After disinfection, place the mercury end deep under the tongue, close your lips tightly, breathe through your nose, and remain still for 3-5 minutes. For electronic thermometers, wait for the beep before taking the reading.

Caution: Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking within 30 minutes before measurement. This method is not suitable for infants or those who are unconscious.

2. Axillary Measurement

Most commonly used, suitable for all ages.

Steps: Dry the armpit, place the mercury end deep under the armpit, and hold the upper arm firmly against the body for 5-10 minutes. For electronic thermometers, ensure the probe is in close contact with the skin. Wait for the beep before taking the reading.

Caution: Insufficient clamping pressure will result in a lower reading. Rest for 30 minutes after strenuous exercise or bathing before taking the measurement.

3. Rectal Measurement

Most accurate, often used for infants or comatose patients. Steps: Apply lubricant to the tip of the probe, lie on your side, and gently insert it 1.5-2.5 cm into the anus (slightly deeper for adults), holding for 3 minutes. The operation is similar for electronic thermometers; wait for the beep to read the temperature.

Caution: Handle gently to avoid damaging the mucous membrane. Thoroughly clean and disinfect after measurement.

4. Ear Temperature Measurement

Quick and convenient, suitable for rapid screening.

Steps: Clean the ear canal. For adults, pull the ear canal back and upward; for children, pull it back to straighten. Position the probe against the eardrum, press the measurement button, and the result will be displayed within 1 second.

Caution: Excessive earwax can affect accuracy. Regular calibration is required; significantly affected by ambient temperature.

5. Forehead Temperature Measurement

Non-contact, hygienic and quick, commonly used in public places.

Steps: Position the probe 3-5 cm from the center of the forehead, press the measurement button, and the result will be displayed within seconds.

Caution: Significantly affected by ambient temperature and perspiration; should be used in a stable environment.

General Precautions

1. Before Measurement: Avoid strenuous exercise, eating, or drinking hot or cold beverages for 30 minutes. Check that the thermometer is intact; mercury thermometers should be shaken down to below 35℃.

2. After Measurement: Clean and disinfect promptly, and store properly. Keep mercury thermometers away from children to prevent breakage.

3. Abnormal Situations: If the body temperature remains above 38.5℃ or is accompanied by chills, confusion, or other symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
