1. Check the stethoscope:
Before use, check whether all parts of the stethoscope are intact, including earplugs, auscultation heads, hoses, etc., to ensure that there is no damage or looseness.
To clean the auscultation head, wipe it with an alcohol cotton ball to remove dirt and bacteria to ensure the accuracy and hygiene of auscultation.
2. Wear the stethoscope:
Gently insert the earplug of the stethoscope into the external auditory canal, being careful not to insert it too deep or too shallow to ensure that the sound can be heard clearly while avoiding discomfort to the ear.
Adjust the position of the earplug so that it fits well with the ear canal to prevent interference from external noise.
3. Choose the auscultation site:
For cardiopulmonary auscultation, common auscultation sites include various areas of the chest, such as the precordial area, different lobes of the lungs, etc. For specific locations, please refer to medical textbooks or consult professional doctors.
Before auscultation, let the patient be in a comfortable position, usually sitting or lying, to better expose the auscultation site.
4. Place the stethoscope head:
Place the stethoscope head gently on the selected auscultation site, pay attention to keep the stethoscope head in good contact with the skin, but do not press too hard to avoid affecting the conduction of sound.
According to needs, different surfaces of the stethoscope head can be used, such as the membrane surface for high-frequency sounds and the bell surface for low-frequency sounds.
5. Adjust the stethoscope:
If an electronic stethoscope is used, adjust the volume, frequency and other parameters appropriately according to the patient's condition and auscultation needs to obtain the best auscultation effect.
For mechanical stethoscopes, adjust the clarity and volume of the sound by rotating the adjustment knob on the stethoscope head.
6. Start auscultation:
Focus and listen to the sounds emitted from the auscultation site, including heartbeats, breath sounds, bowel sounds, etc. Pay attention to the characteristics of the sound such as frequency, rhythm, intensity, nature, and whether there are abnormal sounds.
During the auscultation process, the patient can change his position or take deep breaths to more fully understand the changes in the sound inside the body.
7. Recording and analysis:
If possible, record the sounds heard during auscultation for subsequent analysis and comparison. For electronic stethoscopes, they usually have a recording function, which can directly save the sound files.
Compare the auscultation results with the normal physiological sound range to determine whether there are any abnormalities. If abnormalities are found, further examination and diagnosis are required.
8. Cleaning and maintenance of the stethoscope:
After use, clean the stethoscope in time, especially the stethoscope head and earplugs. You can wipe it with a clean soft cloth, or disinfect it according to the requirements of the instructions.
Keep the stethoscope properly to avoid squeezing, collision or damage. Check the performance of the stethoscope regularly to ensure that it is in good working condition.
