How to determine if you are wearing a stethoscope correctly

Step 1: Confirm the Ear Tube Direction (The Most Crucial Differentiation)
Correct wearing requires the ear tube to be oriented according to the natural shape of the ear canal. The criteria for determining this are:

1. Check the markings: Most stethoscopes have a brand logo, directional arrows, or L/R markings on the front (facing forward). Position the marked side forward; this is the correct orientation.

2. Check the curvature: The ear tube is naturally curved. The convex side of the curve should face forward (directly towards your face), and the concave side should face the back of your neck. When worn, the curvature should naturally conform to the contour of the ear canal.

Step 2: Assess Wearing Comfort
Correct wearing will result in a comfortable fit, while incorrect orientation will immediately cause discomfort:

1. Correct: The earplug fits snugly against the ear canal without noticeable pressure or pain. Even after prolonged wear, the ear won't feel uncomfortable.

2. Incorrect: If the earplug keeps falling out, feels tight and uncomfortable, or cannot be inserted into the ear canal, causing significant discomfort, it's almost certain the orientation is incorrect.

Step 3: Verify the auscultation effect (test takes only 10 seconds) After wearing the auscultator, gently tap the chest piece (stethoscope head) with your finger, or have someone speak softly into the chest piece:

1. If the sound is clear and loud, without obvious noise or sound leakage, the auscultation is correct;

2. If the sound is muffled, faint, or even only ambient noise can be heard, the auscultation is likely incorrect. Adjust the direction of the ear tube and test again.
