1. Appearance and Structural Inspection
First, check the physical integrity of the stethoscope:
Check the rubber tubing for cracks, hardening due to aging, or leaks. Cracks in the tubing will directly cause a significant decrease in sound quality.
Check the diaphragm of the chest piece for looseness, damage, or detachment. A loose diaphragm will cause additional noise.
Check the earpieces for integrity and for severe aging or deformation at the ear canal contact point. Deformation will lead to insufficient sealing and allow ambient noise to leak in.
2. Sound Conductivity Test
This is the most direct functional test method:
First, wear the stethoscope correctly.
Lightly tap or scrape the surface of the chest piece with your finger. If you can clearly hear a uniform scraping sound, the conduction function is basically normal. If the sound is weak or indistinct, there is likely an air leak or conduction obstruction.
For double-sided chest pieces, switch to the other side and repeat the test to ensure that both sides can pick up sound normally. If you cannot hear sound after switching, it indicates that the switching was not done correctly or there is a structural fault.
3. Baseline Sound Comparison Verification
If possible, use a known working stethoscope for comparison:
Find a stable sound source (such as a normal person's heartbeat, placed in the same auscultation position) and compare the clarity and volume of the sounds heard from both. If your stethoscope's sound is significantly softer and more muffled, it indicates a functional abnormality. For home use, you can test your wrist artery to hear the fetal heartbeat; if you can clearly hear the arterial pulsation, it's normal.
Situations requiring replacement/repair:
If a light tap on the chest brace does not produce a clear sound, and there is no improvement after ruling out incorrect wearing;
The catheter is cracked, hardened due to aging, or the earplug's seal is severely inadequate;
If additional noises always accompany auscultation, and these persist after ruling out environmental factors, it indicates structural damage.
