How to Adjust Stethoscope Ear Tubes for the Right Fit

I. Core Adjustments
1. Adjusting the Ear Tube Curve
Hold the metal ear tubes with both hands; gently pull them outward to loosen the fit or press them inward to tighten it, accommodating different head sizes and ear shapes.
Keep the curvature of the left and right tubes symmetrical during adjustment to avoid uneven pressure that could cause localized pain.
2. Optimizing the Eartip Tube Angle
Rotate the eartip tubes 10°–15° toward the ear canals so the eartips align with the natural angle of the canal, distributing the pressure exerted on the ears.
If the tubes are made of soft metal, you can gently bend them to match the curve of your ear canals for a better fit.
II. Targeted Adjustments
1. Too Loose (Slips Easily): Wrap a thin layer of medical tape around the ends of the ear tubes to increase friction, or use needle-nose pliers to gently squeeze the base of the tubes to restore tension.
2. Too Tight (Pinches the Ears): Gently pull both ear tubes outward to widen the gap, or switch to softer silicone eartips to distribute pressure.
3. Asymmetrical Ear Shape: You can make minor, independent adjustments to the curve of each ear tube; there is no need to force perfect symmetry-prioritize comfort for each ear.
III. Final Verification
After adjusting, test the fit by turning and lowering your head; the eartips should not slip out, external noise should be effectively blocked during auscultation, and there should be no significant pain or pressure after prolonged use. If these conditions are met, the fit is correct.
