Description

A manual medical sphygmomanometer is a traditional device used to measure blood pressure. It consists of an inflatable cuff, a pressure gauge (aneroid or mercury), and a bulb pump to inflate the cuff. Healthcare professionals must properly place the cuff on the patient's arm and inflate it to a certain pressure level. They then use a stethoscope to listen to the sounds of blood flow in the patient's arteries, which helps determine systolic and diastolic pressure readings.

Advantage

Accuracy: Manual sphygmomanometers are highly accurate if used properly.
Durability: They are rugged and durable as long as they are properly maintained.
No batteries required: Unlike digital devices, manual sphygmomanometers do not rely on batteries or electricity.
Versatility: Suitable for use in a variety of settings, including clinics, hospitals, and home care.

How it works

The cuff is wrapped around the upper arm and inflated to temporarily cut off blood flow. The air in the cuff is then slowly released, and as the pressure in the cuff decreases, blood begins to flow through the artery again. The Korotkoff sounds produced by the blood flow are listened to with a stethoscope. The pressure when the Korotkoff sounds are first heard is the systolic pressure, and the pressure when the sounds disappear is the diastolic pressure.

Maintenance and Care

1. Store the sphygmomanometer in a clean, dry place.
2. Avoid dropping or mishandling the meter to prevent damage.
3. Clean the cuff and tube regularly with a damp cloth and mild disinfectant.
4. Check the accuracy of the aneroid pressure gauge regularly and recalibrate if necessary.
