Preparation

1. Rest for 5 minutes in a quiet environment before measurement. Do not smoke, drink coffee, tea, etc., 30 minutes before measurement.

2. Check whether the aneroid sphygmomanometer is in good condition, especially whether the pointer can move freely and the scale is clear.

Measurement

1. Sit on a chair with a backrest, keep your feet flat on the ground, do not cross your legs, and place your upper arm on the table so that the center of the sphygmomanometer cuff is at the same level as your heart.

2. Expose the upper arm, wrap the cuff around the upper arm, with the lower edge of the cuff 2-3 cm above the elbow crease. The tightness of the cuff should allow 1-2 fingers to be inserted.

3. Close the air release valve clockwise. Squeeze the rubber ball to inflate the cuff until the pulse sound disappears, and then continue to inflate 20-30 mmHg.

4. Place the chest piece of the stethoscope firmly and directly over the brachial artery underneath the cuff.

5. Slowly open the air release valve counterclockwise at a rate of 2-3 mmHg per second.

6. When you first hear the pulse sound, the value indicated by the pointer is the systolic pressure. Continue to release air until the pulse sound suddenly becomes soft and weak, and the value indicated by the pointer at this time is the diastolic pressure.

Recording and Re - measurement

1. Read the pressure value perpendicular to the scale and record the systolic and diastolic pressures.

2. Repeat the measurement at least twice, with an interval of 1-2 minutes between each measurement. Take the average of the readings as the final result. If the difference between the two readings of systolic or diastolic pressure is more than 5 mmHg, measure again and take the average of the three readings.
