Mouth Thermometer Under The Arm

Using a Mouth Thermometer under the Arm (axillary method) is a common way to measure body temperature, especially for infants, young children, or people who can't safely use the oral method. It's important to note, however, that temperatures taken under the arm are generally not as accurate as oral, rectal, or ear readings. Axillary readings are generally 0.5°F to 1°F (0.3°C to 0.6°C) lower than the actual core body temperature.

1. Use a digital thermometer: Digital thermometers are more accurate and easier to read than mercury thermometers.
2. Ensure proper placement: The tip of the thermometer must be in full contact with the skin of the armpit.
3. Avoid external factors: Wait at least 15 minutes after bathing, eating, or physical exercise before taking a temperature, as these factors can affect the reading.
4. Compare to other methods: If accuracy is critical, consider using a rectal thermometer for infants and an oral thermometer for older children and adults.

1. Preparation: Before measuring, make sure the thermometer is clean. If it is a mercury thermometer, shake the mercury column to below 35°C; if it is an electronic thermometer, turn on the power and make sure it can be used. In addition, if there is sweat, wipe your armpits dry.
2. Measurement: Raise your arm and place the sensing end of the thermometer in the center of your armpit, making sure the thermometer is in full contact with the skin. Then lower your arm and keep it close to your body to fix the thermometer in place.
3. Reading: For mercury thermometers, measure for 3 - 5 minutes; for electronic thermometers, measure for about 1 - 3 minutes. After the measurement is completed, carefully remove the thermometer and read the value.
